En otras épocas, cuando el maestro de la escuela primaria preguntaba “¿Qué hay que hacer cuando se desconoce el significado de algo?” los alumnos respondían al unísono “buscar en el diccionario”. Hoy, ante la misma pregunta y en idénticas circunstancias, cualquier niño de más de seis años respondería naturalmente “buscar en Google”.

El acceso a todo nos obliga a olvidar mucho. Ahora que tenemos la posibilidad de poseer gratuitamente, por ejemplo, toda la música del mundo en nuestra computadora, tendremos que ponernos obligatoriamente selectivos.
Puede que se trate de una buena noticia.

Dado que la globalización es ineluctable (eso me han dicho), que con la caída del Muro de Berlín sucumbió la ideología (eso me han dicho), dado que pronto todo estará en Internet (eso me han dicho) y dado que en Google Earth nunca anochece, y que sin noche toda posibilidad de intimidad desaparece (eso me lo ha dicho Ivan Chaumeille, mi amigo filósofo), podemos empezar a pensar que la ausencia absoluta de alternativa constituye en sí un principio de dictadura. Tampoco parece haber alternativa a la acumulación.

Mientras tanto, desconocemos todo de la poesía irlandesa actual, y esto no parece traumatizar a nadie. Que Jorge Fondebrider publique un libro como los hay pocos y que nadie se entere, tampoco. Son apenas algunos ejemplos.

In past times, when a teacher in Primary school asked “What do you do if you want to find out the meaning of a word”, the pupils would answer in chorus “look it up in the dictionary”. Nowadays, faced with the same question and circumstances, any child older than six would answer “look it up in Google”
The access to everything forces us to forget a lot. Now we have the possibility of having, for free, for example, music from all over the world in our PC, by force, we have to become selective.
Maybe that’s good news.
Given that globalisation is unavoidable (so I was told), that with the fall of the Berlin wall ideologies are a thing of the past (so I was told), given that you can find everything on the Net (so I was told), and given that the sun never sets on Google Earth, and that in night less days the possibility of intimacy disappears (this was affirmed by Ivan Chaumeille, a philosopher friend of mine), we could start thinking about the absolute absence of alternatives, which in itself is a kind of dictatorship. There might not be alternatives either to accumulation.
In the meantime, we are ignorant about current Irish poetry and this doesn’t seem to traumatize anybody. That Jorge Fondebrider publishes a book which defies comparison and nobody knows about it is not surprising either. Just a few examples.
