La entrevista a Leah Leone para Y SIN EMBARGO magazine #15, “inter-visto issue”:

1) Do you… play? What values has or do you give to the ludicrous in your life?
//¿Juega? ¿Qué valor le asigna o tiene en su vida lo lúdico?

Sí, juego, si se le puede llamar así al baile árabe. No lo hago nada bien, de hecho parezco una niña de seis años intenando bailar como los adultos, pero lo disfruto un montón. Y precisamente por eso, por sentirme como una chiquita que todavía no tiene que preocuparse por las cosas de la gente grande: el trabajo, la escuela, las facturas, las personas con los que no me llevo bien. Lo lúdico sirve para estar presente, para experimentar sólo lo que ocurre en aquél momento. Sirve para que uno realmente se sienta libre.

I do play, if you want to call arabic dance playing. I don’t dance very well, and I actually sort of resemble a jack-knife when moving. I look like a six year old girl trying to dance like a grown-up, but I love it. And it is precisely because I look like a six year old girl, I also feel like one. Enjoying myself, I don’t worry about the stuff grown-ups do: work, school, bills, the people I’m not getting along with. Ludic action allows one to fully be present, to experience only the moment. It let’s one truly be free.

3) Do you believe in (or do you subscribe to) an eschatology of transcendence?
// Crees en (o adhieres a) una escatología de la trascendencia?

Sí, pero no me preocupa ni me interesa pasar mucho tiempo adivinando qué exactamente es. No requiero explicación ni justificación. Veo evidencia de los transcendental todos los días. Y si, en fin, termina que no existe nada, el mero hecho de habermelo creído habrá hecho para mí que el mundo sea un lugar un poco más cálido, habré querido un poco más a los demás por encontrar entre nosotros un vínculo que va más allá de la experiencia humana.

Yes. But I am not particularl concerned about what or who or how it actually is. I don’t need any kind of explanation or justification. I see evidence of the transcendental every day. And if, in the end, there really isn’t anything, merely having believed in the transcendental will have made the world a warmer and more comfortable place. I will have loved others just a little bit more, for having found a link among us that goes beyond our human experience.

4) What is the one thing that you never, ever admitted about yourself?
//Qué es lo que nunca, nunca has admitido acerca de tí mismo?

No hay nada. Obviamente no he dicho todo a todos, pero no hay nada sobre mí persona (de lo que estoy consciente) que no he admitido a nadie. Mi vida depende de esto.

Nothing. I of course haven’t told everything to everyone. But there is nothing about myself (at least about which I am currently conscious) that I haven’t admitted to some one. My life depends on it.

7) How do you relate your creative activity to your desire of being socially engaged (in the critique of what exists and the creation of what could be)?
// ¿De qué manera se relaciona tu actividad creativa a tu deseo de estar socialmente comprometido
(en la crítica de lo que existe y en la creación de lo que podría ser)?

Traduzco literatura. Esto es un proceso creativo comprometido, porque es la manera de traer al mundo angloparlante las vidas y las culturas del mundo hispanohablante. Es romper barreras, eliminar esterotipos, ponerse en el lugar del otro en vez de exigir que el otro se ponga en tu lugar. Y cuando traduzco literatura muy sexista, como Enrique Jardiel Poncela, lo hago como una revelación y una subversión de lo misógino que subyace no sólo en su literatura y la época cultural en la que se creyó, sino también para exponer los problemas que todavía existen en ambas culturas.

I translate literature. This is a socially engaged creative process, because it is the way I can bring the English-speaking world to the the Spanish-speaking world. It is breaking down walls, eliminating stereotypes, putting oneself in the place of the Other, instead of demanding the Other to fit into one’s own space. And when I translate sexist literature, such as that by Enrique Jardiel Poncela, I do it to reveal and to subvert the misogyny which underlies not only his literature and the cultural moment in which it was created, but also to expose the problems which still exist among both cultures today.

Which are the five books that should be mandatory in any occidental High school?
//¿Cuáles son los cinco libros que deberían ser obligatorios en cualquier colegio secundario de occidente?

11) What is it that does make sense to produce, in terms of culture, in this time?
// ¿Qué es lo que tiene sentido producir, en términos de cultura, en este tiempo?

Yo no creo que nadie debería sentirse obligado a crear arte comprometido, aunque para mí personalmente, no veo otra posibilidad. El arte tiene que subvertir los medios con los que se cree.

I don’t believe anyone should feel obligated to create socially committted art. But, for myself, I can’t see any other possibility. Art has to subvert the means by which it is created.
