There seems to me to be some tension between the idea of ‘multiple messages’ and that of ‘how many readings?’. ‘Message’ implies a more circumscribed set of meanings, as the sender and receiver have a shared interest in establishing a common meaning (or meanings, as a single set of signals can surely send multiple intended messages). ‘Readings’, however, suggests an object offered for creative interpretation. It is probably folly to attempt to establish one of these modes (common meaning vs. creative interpretation) over the other as a general artistic rule. It makes more sense to shift toward one or the other according to the specific art work being considered. Of the two photos I have offered, ‘Santa Claus de Bogotá‘ is the one with the more circumscribed set of meanings available and intended, while ‘Volador‘ is intentionally more ambiguous and offers wider scope for creative interpretation.

Of course, creative interpretation is socially and politically problematic if one of its side effects is the trivialization of an intended message - this is not a side effect that follows necessarily, but it does seem a plausible scenario. A post-modern celebration of a multiplicity of readings seems democratic on the face of it, but it would seem less so if it somehow managed to erase the freedom to ’send a message’. Furthermore, regarding any work of art as an exemplar of a movement or trend (whether post-modern or otherwise) is, for me, less politically compelling than regarding the specificity of the ‘voice’ of the artist.

Me parece que habría alguna tensión entre la idea de “mensajes múltiples” y aquella de “¿cuántas lecturas?”. “Mensaje” implica un conjunto de significados más circunscrito, ya que el emisor y el receptor tienen un compartido interés en establecer un significado común (o significados, ya que un solo conjunto de señales puede, sin duda, enviar múltiples pretendidos mensajes)
‘Lecturas’, sin embargo, sugiere un objeto ofrecido a la interpretación creativa. Probablemente, es una locura intentar establecer como regla artística general, uno de estos modos sobre el otro (significado común vs. interpretación creativa). Tiene más sentido pasar de uno a otro de acuerdo a la obra de arte específica tenida en cuestión. De las dos fotos que he ofrecido, “Santa Claus de Bogotá” es la que más conjuntos de mensajes circunscritos tiene previstos y disponibles; mientras que “Volador” es intencionadamente más ambigua y ofrece un campo más amplio para la interpretación creativa.

Por supuesto, la interpretación creativa es social y políticamente problemática si uno de sus efectos secundarios es la trivialización de un pretendido mensaje –este no es un efecto que siga necesariamente, pero sí pareciera un escenario plausible. La celebración posmoderna de la multiplicidad de lecturas parece democrática en su superficie, pero podría parecer menos si, de alguna manera, lograra borrar la libertad de “enviar un mensaje”. Más aún, en lo que se refiera cualquier obra artística como ejemplo de un movimiento o tendencia (ya sea posmoderna o lo que sea) para mí es políticamente menos convincente que lo que respecta a la especificidad de la “voz” del artista.
