Como el Quixote, antes de llegar a América, Colón había leído tanto sobre las fantásticas maravillas del Este que nunca pudo concebir que las tierras que conoció en sus cuatro viajes fuesen otras que las imaginadas. Con las imágenes descritas por Marco Polo grabadas en la mente, toda la realidad que Colón encontró tuvo que aplazar y deformarse para caber dentro de los parámetros que ya había establecido antes de llegar. Ni el terreno, ni la fauna y sobre todo ni las gentes americanas correspondían al oriente de las fábulas; no encontró oro ni especias ni perlas ni hombres de piel blanco dispuestos al comercio.

Entre las muchas cosas que los europeos vendrían a saquear de América, la primera fue las voces de sus millones de habitantes. Colón no entendía ninguna de las lenguas nativas, sino concluía tras cada interacción que lo dicho confirmase sus propias percepciones. En la Española, oye mencionar la provincia interior de Cibao, y se convence de que haya llegado a Cipango; cuando otros indígenas le dicen que su isla se llama Sobo, afirma que aquella es Saba, la tierra de los reyes magos. Los indígenas simplemente no sabían pronunciar sus propias lenguas. Y como dice Beatriz Pastor, “Negándole al indígena la palabra, el Almirante se arroga el monopolio del lenguaje y, con él, el de la representación verbal de la nueva realidad… Colón se concede, frente a los habitantes del Nuevo Mundo, el poder exclusivo de crear América” (43-44).

Semejante dilema hallamos 500 años después. Con un nuevo caballero loco a las riendas, los últimos seis años han sido una nueva conquista, un nuevo saqueo, una nueva apropiación de la lengua—fundada en la lectura de ficción. Moldeando el discurso del otro para caber dentro de sus propias concepciones se ha supuesto la voluntad de un pueblo de avasallarse a otro gobierno, la disposición de aportar sus recursos para el bien de gente ajena, la bienvenida a hombres extranjeros a apoderarse de pueblos ajenos. Al quitarle la lengua de los pueblos medio orientales, los EE.UU. y sus aliados se han concedido este mismo poder exclusivo de crear Irak, Afganistán y ahora Pakistán hasta dibujarles el mapa.

Much like the Quixote, before arriving in America, Cristopher Columbus had read so many fantastic narratives about the East, that he was never able to conceive that the lands he “discovered” on his four journeys could be anything but Asian islands he had imagined. With images described by Marco Polo etched in his mind, all reality that Columbus encountered had to differ/defer and reshape itself to fit within the parameters he had already established before arriving. Nothing, not the geography, the fauna, the peoples he met corresponded to the fabled Orient; he did not find gold, pearls, spices or white men eager to trade.

Among the many things the Europeans would eventually sack, the language of the American indigenous was the first. Columbus did not understand any of the native languages, but simply concluded that every interaction was confirmation of what he already knew. In Española, he heard mention of the interior province of Cibao, and was convinced he had arrived in Cipango. When other indigenous islanders tell him that their island is called Sobo, he told his crew they had arrived at Saba, the supposed land of the Three Kings. The indigenous simply did not know how to pronounce their own languages. And, as Beatriz Pastor writes, “denying the indigenous their toungues, the Admiral claimed a monopoly on language, and with it, of all verbal representation of the new reality… Columbus allows himself, before the inhabitants of the New World, the exclusive power to create America” (43-44 my translation)

A similar dilema now exists 500 years later. With a new crazed caballero at the reins, the last six years have been a new conquest, a new pillage, a new appropriation of language—all founded on the reading of fiction. By molding the discourse of the Other to fit a Western hegemony’s own conceptions and desires, a willingness has been determined on behalf of a distant people to submit to a new government; readiness to supply their resources to others; a warm welcome to foreigners who want to run their cities and towns. By robbing the word of the peoples of the Middle East, the U.S. and its allies have granted themselves this same exclusive power to create Iraq and Afghanistan, and now Pakistan, even to the point of redrawing their maps.
